Grey Duck x Rhéaume

Welcome To Grey Duck’s Classic Series

Grey Duck is dedicated to innovation and pushing paddlesports forward in new, exciting ways, however we need always remember where we come from. The story of the canoe reads long and runs deep in North American history. We simply seek to add a chapter or two to the legacy of craftsmen that came before us.

Rheaume Canoe: Where Passion Meets Skill and Tradition

There are few North American canoe stories more rich than those found in Canada. The canoes of Canada helped shape the world we live in today and few companies keep the spirit of tradition alive quite like Rhéaume Canoes. For over 30 years Rhéaume has been masterfully crafting composite canoes with the same attention and class of a wood and canvas prospector.

Why Do We Work With Canada?

Canadian environmental laws tend to be stricter than the U.S. and we believe these canoes have a lower impact on the lands and waters we hold dear. We have taken many queues from Rhéaume such as introducing resin Infusion as our main method of laminating our hulls. Cleaner air and water means more canoeing for generations to come.

Why Do I Want A Canadian Canoe?

Every canoe lover deserves at least one Canadian classic in their collection and Grey Duck has done the heavy lifting by bringing you some of the very best. There are few canoes as versatile and enjoyable as a small prospector style design. As you glide across the cool clean waters of your homeland you can rest easy knowing that the canoe beneath your knees pays homage to the past while caring for the future.

What Makes Them Classic?

The shallow arch hull design with recurved stems is just about synonymous with canoes themselves. Beyond the hull design, the deep dish yoke, dowel seat spacers, lack of bow thwart and white bottoms are all qualities that contribute to the tradition of canoe building over the last 200 years. Our wood trim option also gives a nod to the wood and canvas days by including scuppers along the full length of the rail before being tied-in to large cherry decks at the stems. All of our classic canoes can be soloed in reverse from the bow seat as is the tradition in Canada.

Saganaga 16'6"

The 16'6" Saganaga follows a timeless design that leaves little room for improvement. Reminiscent of the Chestnut Pal, this symmetrical hull is comfortable in a variety of conditions and is the perfect canoe for someone who wants an efficient boat for extended tripping, while also being stable when unloaded for shorter days on the water. Whether you’re fishing a local lake with a loved one or taking on a backcountry river on an extended trip, the Saganaga 16.6 hits the sweet spot every time.

Saganaga 17'

The 17'4" Saganaga is a classic prospector shaped symmetrical canoe that has stood the test of time. This canoe is comfortable in a variety of conditions, and splits the difference between our 16' Clearwater and 16'5" Kawnipi in terms of stability and speed. The larger sibling of our 16'6" Saganaga, this size is best for larger loads, with a capacity of up to 1200 lbs. It's the perfect canoe for someone who wants a boat for extended tripping, while also being comfortable when unloaded for shorter days on the water.
The Saganaga is built using resin-infusion technology, a process that creates the optimum resin to cloth ratio for a strong hull built to last. The addition of gel-coat offers additional UV protection, increased abrasion resistance, better repairability, and the ability to have the canoe the color of your choosing.
